The Mississippi Coordinator reports that families struggle with problems of payment and access to health care for their children, and that SCHIP enrollment has increased but not to the extent anticipated. Children whose families are over income for SSI, but meet the diagnostic or functional criteria for disability, qualify for Medicaid for the Disabled Child at Home. However, children with less severe functional impairments frequently are not eligible for assistance. Managed care plans provide consistency of care, but present difficulties in specialty referral. Communication between health and education systems regarding a child's needs and care plan either does not occur or is not consistent. Our Coordinator met with representatives of Title V/CSHCN to discuss how to work together, get more parents involved, and start a Family Voices Chapter. Our information is distributed at workshops, with packets sent by the ARC/Parent Partners, the PTI, to reach over 2,500 families in the state.
